Children of Men (15)

Saturday 21 April 2.30pm
Director: Alfonso Cuarón. Starring: Clive Owen, Julianne Moore, Michael Caine, Peter Mullan.
USA/UK 2006. 109 mins.

Based on a P.D. James science-fiction novel, CHILDREN OF MEN is set in a futuristic dystopia where humankind is on the brink of extinction and a sole pregnant woman holds the key to the survival of the species. Against a backdrop of London torn apart by violence and warring nationalistic sects, we follow an unlikely champion of Earth's survival: Theo (Owen), a disillusioned exactivist turned bureaucrat, who is forced to face his own demons and protect the planet's last remaining hope. As one would expect from the great Mexican director Alfonso Cuarón, this is stylish, intelligent fare that superbly recreates the horror and tension of James's novel. It is sumptuously shot by the Mexican's regular DoP Emmanuel Lubezki and the A-list cast is on top form too.

Deciding to carry out his last wishes and ttake his ashes to be scattered in Margate, the three head for the coast, driven by Jack's son (Ray Winstone). As they drive, they reminisce about their past experiences, reliving and reviving old memories, both good and bad. Unfolding in flashback, Australian director Fred Schepisi presents an intelligent and affectionate exploration of sixty years of London life.
