In October 1928 Virginia Woolf delivered a lecture on ‘Women and Fiction’ at Newnham College. A week later she spoke on the same subject at Girton College. This lecture was published as a magazine article, then revised and expanded to become Woolf’s highly acclaimed feminist text A Room of One’s Own. Why did Virginia Woolf think it important for women to have a room they could call their own? And what should they do in it?

Woolf expert Claire Nicholson (Anglia Ruskin University) will lead this workshop to examine key themes in this landmark text which makes connections between women’s domestic life, education and literature.

Please bring along your copy of A Room of One’s Own if you have one. Printed extracts from the text and handout materials will be provided.
