A wonderful pairing of two accomplished writers of life on the dark side. Louise Welsh’s new psychological chiller, The Girl on the Stairs, is set in Berlin and traces a pregnant woman’s isolated preoccupation with the monuments and reminders of the Holocaust which echo round the city. Christobel Kent’s unsettling novel, the fourth in her Sandro Cellini series, is set in Florence, with corrupt officials, dusty strade and pickpockets on the Ponte Vecchio. If you’re a fan of crime fiction and not yet encountered either of these crime impresarios this is a must.
