Praised as “one of the most impressive novelists of his generation”, and credited by Trevor Nunn with “one of the great novels of this or any other century” for 2005’s Human Traces, Sebastian Faulks is a deserved recipient of his CBE for services to literature. Best known for The Girl at the Lion d’Or (1989), Birdsong (1993) and Charlotte Gray (1998), Faulks saw the second book in the trilogy serialised for the BBC earlier this year. His other works include Engleby (2007) and A Week in December (2009). Faulks is a team captain on BBC Radio 4 literary quiz, The Write Stuff, and presented 2011’s BBC Two series, Faulks on Fiction.

In A Possible Life, Faulks explores how soldiers and lovers, parents and children, scientists and musicians risk their bodies and hearts in search of some kind of connection, some key to understanding what it is that makes us the people we become. Provocative and profound, this dazzling novel journeys across continents and time exploring the chaos created by love, grief and divided loyalties, and revealing the unseen links between generations, people and countries. However alone we might feel or seem, the ways in which memories and experience echo through history illustrate our shared humanity.
