A fascinating and important documentation that shatters the official line that the UK does not ‘participate in, solicit, encourage or condone’ torture.  And yet, the evidence is irrefutable: when faced with potential threats to national security, the gloves always come off. Drawing on previously unseen official documents, freedom of information requests, and the accounts of witnesses, victims and military experts, Cobain uncovers a shocking record of systematic torture, from WWII to the War on Terror, via Kenya and Northern Ireland.

Ian Cobain is an investigative reporter with The Guardian.  His inquiries into the UK’s involvement in torture since 9/11 have won the Martha Gellhorn Prize and the Paul Foot Award for investigative journalism, and he has been shortlisted for the Orwell Prize. He has won several Amnesty International media awards and a Liberty award.

Ian Cobain will be in conversation with Philippe Sands, Professor of International Law at University College London and author of the acclaimed Torture Team.
