About the Festival

History of the Festival

Cambridge Wordfest was conceived and launched in 2003 by Cathy Moore with support from Cambridgeshire County Council and a small but dedicated band of friends and volunteers. The festival has been well-attended and enthusiastically praised from the very first, and has gone from strength to strength. The first Wordfest consisted of 28 events, and included readings from Jackie Kay & Ali Smith, Will Hutton, Polly Toynbee, Nicci French and Francesca Simon. Six years on, Wordfest 2008 will showcase 60 events and workshops and we expect to attract more than 6,000 people. Participants on both sides of the lectern have expressed their appreciation of the festival:

"Cambridge audiences are always receptive and enthusiastic and both with the organisers and the audience I felt I was among friends"

PD James

"Still remains one of my favourite literary festivals."

Graham Swift

"Cambridge Wordfest offers exactly what you'd want in a festival..."

AL Kennedy
